Information Integrity: Repairing a Decade of Disinformation - Roundtable

Monday 17th March 2025 | 2pm-6:30pm BST

Roundtable event from 2PM to 5PM BST followed by drinks and dinner reception from 5PM to 8:30PM BST One Birdcage Walk, Westminster, London, SW1H 9JJ By invitation only. Event to be held under the Chatham House rule.
The past decade has seen a significant increase in online disinformation, election interference, and sociodemographic polarisation. Against a backdrop of growing geopolitical tension, divisive political rhetoric and the amplification of conspiracy theories, 2024 saw one of the largest number of elections in democratic countries in history. There are lessons to be learned and taken forward.
Policymakers, researchers and standards developers are facing a seemingly impossible task: Repairing a decade of disinformation, and preventing the same mistakes from happening in the future.
This roundtable will bring together policymakers, academics and cybersecurity experts in order to encourage reflections on Information Integrity. We hope to have speakers from the Coalition of Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) group.
We equally hope to encourage speakers who might be skeptical about planned Information Integrity standards, in order to probe deeper into potential areas of weakness.

2:00PM- 3:15PM. Information Integrity.

Moderator: Emily Taylor, CEO at DNSRF
Discussants:

The opening session will dive straight into Information Integrity, acknowledging the existing sociopolitical backdrop of online disinformation, and exploring emerging strategies which combat this. We hope for there to be focus on the C2PA coalition, and standards-makers who are focusing on Information Integrity.

  • What are the different elements of Information Integrity, and how does it protect against disinformation, fraud, and attackers?
  • What are existing Information Integrity initiatives, and what strategies do they use to ensure authenticity?
  • How are policymakers using initiatives such as C2PA to incorporate Information Integrity into digital standards?

4:30 PM-5:00 PM. Trust, Authenticity and Further Challenges.

The second session will focus on future risks, as well as exploring more theoretical ideas such as the concepts of “Trust” and “Authenticity”. We hope to hear from experts in digital forensics who may provide insights into how attackers are currently exploiting weaknesses in Information Integrity initiatives. We also hope to hear about how we can better identify weaknesses in initiatives such as C2PA, in order to prevent further harms.

  • What is “Trust” when it comes to Information Integrity?
  • How do we know when individuals are authentic?
  • How do we stop attackers from identifying weaknesses in provenance, validation, watermarking and fingerprinting?
  • Is there more to be done in terms of authentication, such as utilising blockchain technology?
  • Future challenges such as AI, corporate influence, and evolving criminal activities.
